All the girls got a raffle ticket when they entered, for a chance to be queen of the Mardi Gras Dance. Our older girls wore princess crowns and they all got a chance to pick a younger scout to join them. The girls gave the younger scouts crowns to wear too. When the Mardi Gras princess court was all set we picked a name out of the raffle. The queen came up to the microphone and announced "Let Mardi Gras begin". It was so nice to see the older scouts with the younger scouts. <strike></strike>

michelle khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12910899680782153615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2159242541234279160.post-71555324885480877592016-01-05T07:20:00.002-08:002016-01-05T07:25:52.960-08:00Gratify Gluten Free SnacksLooking for new gluten free food products? Well I won a give basket full of Gratify gluten free products. I was a little leery a first because I thought there wouldn't be much flavor. The first pretzels I tried were the Dark Chocolate Covered Twists. The dark chocolate coating was rich and flavorful and the pretzels were crisp with a nice salty bite to them. Next, I chose the dark chocolate and peppermint covered twists. They are also wonderful tasting. I am finding them a little addicting as I keeping running into the kitchen for more. In addition to being gluten free, the dark chocolate and peppermint covered twists also have 0g Trans Fat. The website lists the local store were they can be bought. I can't wait to try more of these delicious products.
This was our giveaway for our spa party. Everything was brought from the Dollar Store. We printed names with our slice cutter and then we taped over them with packing tape so the names wouldn't get wet. Inside we put in flip flops, a back sponge with a scrunchy tied around the handle. Also inside was a back massage thingy, wash cloth, head band and little bowl for manicures. We used a lot of the items for the spa party. The prize back was less than ten dollars and it looked so cute!
If you have a lot of nail polishes, this is a fun game to play. Sit the girls in a circle and then line up your nail polishes. Take the 1st bottle and put in in the middle and lay in on its side. Each girl will spin the nail polish bottle and if lands on them, they will paint one finger on their hand. Put the polish at the back of the line and pick the next bottle Keep spinning the bottles until all girls have finished their nails. They will all look cute with crazy nails. This game took along time to play but they sure had fun!michelle khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12910899680782153615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2159242541234279160.post-63958192388262388662014-07-01T16:06:00.000-07:002016-01-04T19:42:30.704-08:00Balloon Flip Flops

For a fun cheap craft we made these balloon flip flops. The flip flops were from the dollar store and I bought about 100 balloons per scout. The craft is so easy, all they have to do is tie the balloons around the tops of the flip flops. I recommend checking if any of your scouts have an allergy to latex. One ours did and we didn't know it until her face started to have red blotches on it. The girls had fun making the project and they looked so cute when they were done!
This is a really cute display for World Thinking Day. I love how they have the Country's name displayed above the board. Everyone gets so creative for their tables. The Eiffel Tower adds to the table. World Thinking Day is one of my favorite events of the year.

These were the center pieces for the Mother Daughter Dance. At some point during the Mother Daughter Dance the center pieces are always raffled off. The bags were cute but a little disappointing. Everyone wanted the bag because they thought something was inside it but they were surprised when it was empty.

Just a hint, If you want to do a center piece like this put something in the bag. That way you won't have any disappointed little girls!michelle khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12910899680782153615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2159242541234279160.post-46280148106973763362014-06-25T14:04:00.000-07:002016-01-04T19:44:47.722-08:00Let's Learn About Flowers

This was a project we worked on, so the girls could learn the parts of a flower. We used a cup for the bottom and turned it over ( We probably should have used a bigger cup). The stem was a large spoon wrapped in green tape. The petals were just cut out of card stock. We used two different colors of pipe cleaners for the filament and style. The anther was made by wrapping cotton to the top of the filament. For the stigma we used yellow yarn wrapped around the style. The parts of flower were all labeled with numbers and the bottom had a key. I think the flower project was fun and educational. michelle khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12910899680782153615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2159242541234279160.post-6624132820214787532014-06-18T15:17:00.000-07:002014-06-22T15:57:50.846-07:00Swaps for Polynesia

These are the swaps that we made for World Thinking Day. First we printed out these cute hula girls. Then we laminated them and cut them out. We attached a pin back to it and it is complete. Very simple and they look great! The girls each had two, one to keep and one to swap.
We were assigned the Polynesian Islands. We could have done just French Polynesian but we decided to break up the girls into to groups of four and assign different countries. The countries they picked were USA-Hawaii, New Zealand, Fiji and Tahiti. All these islands and many more make up the Polynesian Islands. We cut the poster boards in half and each group of girls made their own. On our table we had the display posters, decorations from Party City and posters we received from Tahiti and New Zealand. Hawaii and Tahiti tourism bureaus were nice enough to send us pens, magnets, brochures, and bracelets to pass out. We also bought a box of leis to pass out.. For food we served mango salsa and chips. This is usually one of the best events of the years. Our table looked great!!

At one of our meeting the girls learned how to use a sewing machine. We made tote bags out of girl scouts shirts that we bought at the girl scout store. We also made jean pocket purses. Most of the girls had never used a sewing machine before. This was a great experience for them. When I was young we had sewing in Junior High School. They don't have anything like this anymore in our middle schools. It's fun to learn new things!
Our troop wanted to go to a different campground. In northeast Illinois we are lucky to have a lot of girl scout properties. When we signed up for the Journey in a weekend, it didn't specify where we were going to stay. We had a address and that was about it. Well, this is the building we stayed at. The girls had the whole second floor. The windows on top pushed out and there were cubbies that the girls could sit in. The property was amazing and it was only forty five minutes from our homes. There were trails, cabins and outdoor areas to pitch tents. The girls wanted to come back and go to one of the cabins. I think we just might do this in the fall.
With all the hard work it takes to complete a bronze award, the girls should have something to show off their achievement. We printed out the awards and had them framed so the girls could either hang them up or put them on their dressers. Way to go girls!!!

At our mother daughter dance we had a professional photo booth. At first we weren't sure if this was a good idea but it ended up being a lot of fun. There were a lot of troops attending and we didn't want to have a free for all, so we gave year troop a time slot. The slots were a half hour, which was plenty of time. There were glasses, masks, headbands and many other props. The photo strips were free and they were also downloaded to shutterfly so we could order more. The mom's even had fun and all piled into the booth.
This is a great idea for any event!!
Its usually held around Mothers Day. This year is was held a little earlier. Everyone looks forward to this yearly event. The theme this year was a Hawaiian luau. All troops from seniors to daisies attend and are so excited to be there. When you enter there is a table with name tags and your table number. All troops are seated together, if the mothers have girls in multiple troops then they are seated with the troop of their choice. Some years the girls are given a raffle ticket for something special that will be raffled off during the evening.
The mother daughter dance is held a the same venue every year. A professional photographer is there and photos are available for purchase. Pricing is very reasonable $12.00 for a 5x7 in a acrylic frame and two wallets sizes. The backgrounds and props are coordinated with the theme of the dance. Every troop must donate at least one raffle basket with the theme or their choice. Money is raised to keep the costs of the dance low. Every year the food options are different. This year family style entrees were served. Some of them were not too kid friendly but the mothers enjoyed it.
The evening starts out with dinner and desert. During dinner volunteer awards are given. Troops that have accomplished the bronze, silver or gold awards are acknowledged. Afterwards, the music gets everyone dancing. Our DJ knows the most up to date music. There is always the Hokey Pokey, Casper Slide, Chicken Dance and Cotton Eyed Joe. Everyone knows the dance is not complete without the limbo, hula hoop contest and my favorite the mother daughter slow dance. This year we were all lucky enough to be serenaded by the girls with their favorite song " Let it go". The dance is my favorite part of the year. We are all blessed to have these beautiful daughters and spend some special time with them.
The girls came up with a service project for our local crisis center. They decided they wanted to do a scavenger hunt. A week before our hunt we picked three long blocks in our neighborhood that we wanted to go to. One girl scout lived on each block. Paper bags with notes attached to them were distributed to all of the houses letting them know we would be arriving during our regular meeting time. The note stated that a girl scouts lives on their block and we would be doing a scavenger hunt next week during the times on 4:30 to 6:00. We requested items such as toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant, soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner and other personal items. If they didn't have anything we would also accept can or boxed food. Participants had to leave their items on the front porch and if nothing was there the girls would be ringing the doorbell. The day of our scavenger hunt the girls split into three groups. A lot of the neighbors left the bags on the doorstep. Everyone was excited to go and do the hunt. Our neighborhood was very generous and the girls had a great time. Points were given for items, food was one point and personal items two points. We didn't give out prizes, we just counted our items and tallied the points. After all the hard work we celebrated with pizzas and chocolate chip cookies. The scavenger hunt turned out to be a success for us and the crisis center!
When all the girls arrived they were all ready for our regular meeting. The leader told them to gather all their things because we were leaving. The girls looked totally confused, she told them we were going bowling. "What? We are going bowling now?" one of the girls asked. She told them "Yes, right now!" Then they all started jumping up and down. We got a great deal on the bowling from Double Take Offers. It included 3 games of bowling, pizza, pop and shoes for four girls for $18.00. The girls bowled only two games because we stopped to have pizza and awards. The bowling alley was nice enough to give us coupons for one game that we can use next year. All the girls got bowling pins that were painted green with a gold bow. We brought sharpies so they could all exchange autographs. This was a great way to end the year!
The turnout was great, there were about thirty girls and ten moms. Our troop was the first to arrive and claim our spots in a very large room. The girls ate dinner and hung our for about an hour before they started working. They all introduced themselves and got into small groups. They talked about stereotypes and came up with really cute skits to show that they understood was stereotypes were. More fun activities from the journey book were completed. At the end of the night the girls had about an hour to come up with a plan to complete their journey. The plan was a service project they wanted to do and how to implement it. Our girls completed three different plans, so at our next meeting we can get started. This really was a nice change of pace for our girls and a fun way to start a journey. Our troop completed the Amaze journey and one other as juniors,it was a lot of work. I would suggest to anyone doing a journey the second time around to attend a class offered your council. It was fun!!
I am very excited about this because it took us about six months to complete our other two journeys we did as juniors. I hoping this will be fun for the girls because it is compact and taught by someone other than their usual leaders. There isn't too much information given on the description of the weekend so it really shall be a surprise. I don't even know what to expect. Has anyone else had fun with journey weekends?
Follow the link and win! Imagine what you can do. I think I would use the money for our upcoming camping trip. It would make the cost to the girls a little less and everyone could go. It is fun to dream!
The snow storm made it very difficult to get there but we made it. There were thousands of other girl scouts in attendance. Before the game there were activities for the girls. Speakers were on hand to encourage the girls to sell their cookies. They gave an award to a scout that sold 3,000 boxes of cookies last year. That is a pretty amazing feat. During the game there were girls scouts everywhere in the stand waving green pom-poms. The hockey players even came on the jumbo screens and were eating girl scout cookies. What a great way to get excited about cookie time. The wolves won the game 2-1, a great way to end the night. Check out a rally night in your area, it is really fun!
Our country is Polynesia and there are a lot of Islands we can choose from. I think we ended up with a great country this year! This is the first time we will try working on I-pads for a meeting, even the girl scouts have to keep up with technology.
This week we are having a meeting to start preparing. I did a little research and e-mailed a few countries tourism bureaus. So far I heard from Hawaii, they are supplying the troop with pencils, magnets and bracelets. The New Zealand convention bureau had a nice map that we can order.
The Tahitian tourist information contact is going to send us posters and 200 pens. I think this is a great start. The girls will be so excited when they find out. michelle khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12910899680782153615noreply@blogger.com0
